The season ended for the Stadium Tigers girls soccer team on Nov. 11 in their first-round state playoff game against Jackson at Everett Memorial Stadium. Jackson won, 4-1.

Despite the disappointment, the young Tigers team had a very successful season, finishing 8-2 in the Narrows League, scoring 39 goals while giving up 9.

Stadium got into this state playoff game by virtue of a gutsy performance in the district tournament.

It had been a cheerful lot of Stadium players after they defeated Emerald Ridge, 2-1, in a Central District elimination game Nov. 4.

Stadium had fallen behind, 1-0, and rallied to tie the game with a goal by junior midfielder Rachel McMahon off a corner kick from senior midfielder Tiana Brockway.

“I hit the ball pretty much where I wanted to and someone deflected it a little, but Rachel was able to volley it in,” said Brockway.

It was a huge boost to the Tigers, who had been struggling in recent games after having had an 8-0 start to their season. Two losses to South Kitsap and one to Olympia in the past three weeks tested the confidence of the young team with 17 underclassmen and just five seniors on the roster.

But seniors saved the season against Emerald Ridge.

In the first overtime golden-goal period, Tristian Dear lofted a pass to Chelsea Jennings, who booted in the winning goal.

“Tristian gave me the ball and I had a couple defenders on me,” said Jennings, describing the shot later. “And basically [I] plowed my way through them and then slotted it far post passed the keeper from a little inside the 18. No problem!”

The victory set up the match against Jackson. Jackson goalkeeper JC Wilson made a critical save on a Jennings shot that would have tied the game midway through the first half, after Katie Reese had floated in a cross for a 1-0 lead. After that Jackson kept the pressure on the Tigers, taking a 2-0 lead into the half, and getting a devastating third goal with 18 minutes remaining in the game. Nicole Williams scored the only goal for Stadium, which finished the season at 14-5-1.
