Tacoma professionals get jazzy

JazzyJune serves up good times for making fun business connections

Local professionals will gather once more for the JazzyJune Audition and Business Networking party on June 25. The festivities are hosted by Women’s Resource and will take place at the new William W. Philip Assembly Hall, at the University of Washington-Tacoma, from 5:30-9 p.m.

This year, participants will have the opportunity to discover hidden talents behind business owners in the community. Rachael Costner, director of Women’s Resource and owner of Sands Costner & Associates, said she expects about 200 people to attend this year. She also hopes to attract more talent, so the event will live up to its “jazzy” name.

“The talent usually comes from singers that work by day at places like Bates Vo-tech, the American Heart Association, Cookie Lee, Arthur Murray, Nordstrom’s, and Hawaiian Airlines,” Costner said. “A lot of talent also comes from local churches and those that dedicate their talent to their music.”

Complimentary wine tasting from 5:30-6:30 p.m. is another new perk participants will enjoy this year. Costner said professionals are invited to buy a glass of wine for $6 and WineStyles will donate $1 for every glass to Multiple Sclerosis research.

With so much to do, Costner said her favorite part of the night is definitely the talent, which has been uncovered by word of mouth and Women’s Resource connections.

“I know it’s a show that will be well enjoyed,” she said. “I love it because it’s a creative way to bring business owners together in Tacoma.”

The mission of JazzyJune has always been to support success through real connections, provide knowledge and opportunity through abundant resources, and allow for casual and comfortable conversations where relationships in business and life expand.

“I continually look for new ways to purposefully connect and network by creating unique venues and opportunities that appeal to the busy lifestyles we lead,” Costner said. “The power (in the event) is in the variety, the fun, the laughter, the authentic connections and resources.”

JazzyJune’s history began on a hot August night in 2001 at the top of the Landmark Convention Center on St. Helens Avenue in Tacoma. Attendance topped 70 and there was no live entertainment. Costner said the event attracted about 20 exhibitors, had great food, and the night finished with a champagne toast.

“It seemed to be the hottest night in August that year, so we quickly decided we did not want to live up to our name of Hot August Nights,” Costner jokes. “People should go to JazzyJune for three reasons – it’s local, it’s the best networking dollar value, and proceeds benefit MS of Washington.”

Tickets to Women’s Resource JazzyJune Audition and Business Networking party cost $39 and can be purchased by visiting http://www.jazzyjune.com or calling (253) 572-9108. Door ticket sales will not be available. From every ticket sale, $2 will be donated to the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Washington.
